In Loving Memory of Belle
October 15, 2007 - January 26, 2008
It is with great sadness that we report that Belle crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. Since our last update her health slowly began to deteriorate and she was ultimately diagnosed with Lupus, a very serious auto-immune disorder which effects many of the body's organs. It was evident that she could not longer continue to fight the illness that was taking over her body.
Belle was estimated to be about 4 or 5 years old but we believe that her life truly began when she came into rescue on October 15th, 2007. Whatever her past life had been, it really was no life at all. She was cast out to fend for herself. We cannot help but believe that her system was compromised beyond repair as a result of the time she spent as a stray dog. Belle spent the last four months of her life in a loving home with a full tummy, a warm, soft bed to rest her weary body, and the love and kindness that she so deserved. Even though her last months were difficult for her, she was not alone.
Belle, our greatest wish for you was to give you a second chance; to make you well and find a home that would cherish you as a beloved family member. But perhaps it was you who gave us the second chance to prove to you that there really are kind, compassionate humans that truly do care about the welfare of animals.
You touched the hearts of many, who hoped as we did, that you would recover despite the mounting odds against you. The concern for your well being was not limited just to your foster family, the rescue, or the vet staff who tended to you, but from people near and far that read your story and donated to your cause.
For the short time you could you showed us glimpses of your spirited, mischievous self. A dog that longed for walks in the woods and car rides. You got so excited at times that we could barely keep you still enough to put your winter coat on. Even when your body was failing you managed to muster up the strength to wag your tail when you knew we were going for a ride. You were so very helpful with snow shoveling, making sure that you put as much snow back on the sidewalks as you could. And we could always count on your to remind us when it was time for your bed time snack. It was hard to miss all of the dog bowls you would carry around the house and drop in the living room.
You have reaffirmed for us what rescue is all about and why there is a continued need for animal rescues. As heartbreaking as rescue can be we will continue our rescue mission in honor of you and the many other dogs like you.
Farewell our Sweet Belle. Fear not what lies ahead, for you are in a better place now. As you begin your new life's journey, remember that you were truly loved and are deeply missed.
